About the show

Take up space at Production Workshop this spring.

Direct a play. Devise a project. Dance a dance.

4+ weeks in a big black box.

$1000 budget

Pitch it: we'll listen.

We are currently accepting applications for PW’s FALL SLATE. We are open to full-length, one act, or otherwise experimental works.

Because PW manages its own theater spaces, we have flexibility in the number of shows we produce each semester depending on the proposals we pass. However, we are generally looking to produce two projects for the fall, one with performances in ~late October/early November and one with performances in ~late November/early December. Exact slot dates will be determined with the selected directors.

If you are interested in proposing, please fill out this Google Form ASAP to get a board buddy who can guide you through the proposal process:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScYl4phwMx87AwtxgkOtTC4qa69B8lba9eAEJUfHlFOnCBiVQ/viewform

A board buddy is mandatory for each proposal.

We invite any and all people, with any and all ideas to apply. This is your chance to create an amazing piece of art for the Brown community to see!!!

Your proposal can take any form you’d like, but please ensure all of the following prompts are addressed. For your convenience, these questions are also available on this Google Doc.

  1. Please provide your full name, graduating class year, email, and phone number.

  1. Please attach or provide a link to your project’s script, if applicable. (If proposing a script that would require PW to acquire performance rights, please also provide a link to the licensing company.)

  1. What are you proposing? Describe your artistic vision. (You may find it helpful to look at “The Spaces” page of the PW website, to get a better idea of the Downspace theater – or Upspace, if you’d prefer – where the show would take place.)

  1. Is there anyone else currently involved in this project? If so, please list their name and expected position here. (This question is optional! There is no requirement that anyone else be involved at this stage of the project. If helpful, a list of PW’s standard production roles can be found here.)

  1. What excites you about this project? What impact do you hope it will have?

  1. Why do you think you would be an effective director? Please describe your past theatrical, artistic, and/or managerial experience, at Brown or otherwise. What insights and qualities do you believe you bring to the role for this project specifically?

  1. Is there anything that concerns or worries you about going into this project? How might you plan to address those concerns?

  1. How are you going to most productively and effectively use your time in the space? Please be specific in outlining a schedule for your project. (Take a look at this example of a production calendar as a jumping off point.)

  1. Look over the PW mission statement. How will your project align with PW’s mission? Be specific and take time to meaningfully engage with this questions –– you may consider a variety of production aspects, such as the script, casting, production team, rehearsal dynamics, and more.

  1. Finally, tell us what you ate for breakfast this morning :-)

In addition to the written proposal, applicants will have a 15-minute interview with the PW Board. The interview will include an opportunity for applicants to take up to five minutes to “pitch” their project. This is an opportunity for you to share your vision with us, show us why you are excited, and get us excited too! Board buddies will help applicants schedule and plan for their interview times.

We look forward to reading your proposals !!!
