why should i apply?
You love theater and are interested in putting together a season of exciting new shows, especially plays, festivals, and experimental works!
You’re interested in learning more about producing!
You’re excited about supporting student theater of all kinds and making theater a more inclusive space!
Unlike the other theater groups on campus, PW oversees its own physical theater space at TF Green Hall. Being on the PW board could be a great fit if you’re interested in learning about arts administration, tech theater, or simply running a theatrical production company!
what does a pw board member DO?
Here's a very brief and not all-inclusive list:
solicit and select proposals from student directors for production in our large black box theater, the downspace.
think about theater at Brown and create opportunities for artists that don't currently exist in the Brown theater landscape.
executive produce downspace productions, helping first-time and experienced production teams navigate making theater at pw
organize and maintain the upspace, our smaller black box theater, by running the upspace lottery and offering small arts grants.
AND SO MUCH MORE. Check out the jobs page on our website to learn about all the fun things we do!
how to apply
Step 1: ask for a board buddy
A board buddy is a current member of the PW board who will walk you through the application process. Fill out THIS FORM to be assigned a board buddy as soon as you think you might be interested in applying! We ask that all applicants meet with a board buddy at least once, to make things as smooth as possible for everyone! <3
Step 2: make an application
Your application can take ANY form you desire. (Examples from the past include written bullet points, a powerpoint, paragraphs, a comic, an interpretive dance…no one actually did that last one but we think it would be exciting. Anyway, long story short, do what you want!)
However, please make sure to address the following questions:
Describe your experience with theater, art, or performance in any/all capacities at Brown and or elsewhere. Are there areas of theater or arts work you feel comfortable in and are there any you would like to learn more about?
Describe a group project, theatrical or otherwise, and the role you played in it. What did you learn from it?
What projects/skills might you like to pursue as a board member?
What is your favorite play or piece of media in general? Why? (We’re just nosy hehe)
Please read the PW mission statement, which is at the core of our work. What does it mean to practice this mission statement to you? You might also consider your own positionality and intersecting identities.
If you are accepted to the board, would you like to be contacted via phone call or email? If you choose the phone call option, please provide the best number to reach you.
Which kitchen utensil do you most identify as?
You may answer the questions in any way that your heart wishes! No matter the format, be sure to touch on all of the above topics.
For your copying convenience, you can find all of these questions in this Google doc.
Interested in applying?!!! Go ahead and fill out the board buddy form!
